What a beautiful trip!!! Weather was wonderful! Water was pristine. Best of all it was extremely quiet. You could hear the flapping of birds flying over. Full review by LightPacker811616

A good friend and our two 13 year old boys ventured the Lily Lake Loop off of the Arrowhead Trail. This is a challenging, yet rewarding series of lakes and portages with stunning campsite locations. … Full review by adrianbM5044UV

My husband, sons and I have enjoyed a few day trips canoeing on lakes and rivers in Indiana and are thinking that we might like to take the family on a three, possibly four night trip to the Boundary Waters. Next year our sons will be 13, 11, 9, and 7. Canoe camping is new to us and I would like to use an outfitter. Could someone make a recommendation for an outfitter or a part of the park that we should begin? Also, Am I crazy to think that we could take a trip this in two canoes, or would we require three? We are all smaller people if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Hello. It really depends on what trip you want to do and your entry point. Do you want to go and base camp, then do day trips from a stationary site? Do you want to do a circuit trip where you move each day? A stationary site might be easier for first timers. I'd recommend Gunflint Lodge to discuss, there are some great entry points close and you can see Canada across the lake. But honestly, there are good outfitters in Ely and Seagull lake outfitters are good too.

You can get the 'experience' but not be in the BWCA by going up to Gunflint lake or Ham Lake, renting a canoe at a local outfitter. It usually takes a couple of hours to get to an entry point from civilization so you probably don't want to try to just paddle around for a day, that is a lot of work for just a paddle. You can even camp in Superior National Forest, they have dispersed camping within the forest, just like the BWCA and it's free.
