For emerging British talent, Wednesday was an extraordinary day. Fourteen Britons – seven each in the men’s and women’s singles competitions – secured their place at Wimbledon. Only, the players did not have their tennis to thank as much as their nationality.

Two-time Wimbledon women’s singles champion Petra Kvitova is the one foreign player to be given a wild card. The 35-year-old is ranked world No572 as she slowly works her way back from the birth of her first child last year.
